Heritage Rescue works with communities to assist with rejuvenation projects in small public museums. In 2017 a team from Heritage Rescue (a programme that screens on Choice TV) worked alongside our museum staff, volunteers, and the local community to revamp the museum frontage. A kōwhaiwhai mural designed by Paul Atkinson was painted on the front wall by a group of our wonderful volunteers. A small waka made by the late Murray Thacker, was mounted on the wall as part of the revamp which was officially unveiled on Waitangi Day 2017. A plaque alongside the waka acknowledges Murray’s generosity as the museum’s founder. The Heritage Rescue episode about Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum will screen on Choice TV later in 2019.
