Across the road from the Museum building is the Waka shed which houses the Museum's two large waka. These both have an amazing history. Make sure you take the time to wander across the road to check these out.
On Waitangi Day, you can enjoy the thrill of seeing the wakas out on the water. It is a very moving sight to see these 3 ton craft being paddle up the Opara Stream to the landing area. Come on over on Waitangi Day and enjoy the thrill too!

There is also a Maori Canoe shed in the Museum area proper which holds an extensive collection of waka and related items including smaller waka called waka-titi, which were used for fishing and eeling. The shed also includes a small carving room, where carvers and weavers can practice their craft.
